Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 2

In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

Gradually add the water, stirring until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

  4. 4

Peel, core, and slice the apples. In a large bowl, combine the apple slices, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly.

  5. 5

Roll out one disc of dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place the dough in the pie pan and fill with the apple mixture.

  6. 6

Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling. Seal the edges and cut slits in the top crust for steam to escape.

  7. 7

Beat the egg with milk and brush the mixture over the top crust.

  8. 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the crust is golden brown.

  9. 9

Remove from the oven and let cool before serving.
